IRISH BREEDING AND BLOODSTOCK OPERATION. Browne Brothers Bloodstock acts as the breeding manager behind Oakley Park Mares Syndicate, rather than the trainer of a racehorse in training. The syndicate focuses on broodmares and their progeny, with the intention of preparing horses for bloodstock sales rather than retaining the offspring to race.
Browne Brothers Bloodstock is run by brothers Oisín and Dylan Browne, with its stud base at Oakley Park near Kells in County Meath, Ireland. The business works with breeders and owners across bloodstock selection, broodmare management, foaling, youngstock development and sales preparation.
The brothers grew up within a horse-racing family, drawing on the knowledge of their father David and grandmother. Their first breeding-stock purchase came in 2016, when they bought Howareyabelle in foal to Es Que Love. Her resulting filly, later named Bestrella, became their first yearling sales graduate and subsequently won for trainer Johnny Murtagh.
Through Oakley Park Mares Syndicate, members can follow the breeding process from pregnancy and foaling through youngstock development and preparation for sale. The precise interest in each mare and her progeny, the costs involved and entitlement to sale proceeds are defined by the individual syndicate agreement.
Browne Brothers Bloodstock’s published stud base is Oakley Park Stud near Kells, County Meath, Ireland. The operation provides services for broodmares and youngstock, including breeding-stock management, foaling, grass livery and preparation for the sales ring.
Its wider services also include breaking and pre-training, alongside sales representation and bloodstock sourcing. For the Oakley Park breeding opportunity, the emphasis is on the care of mares and their progeny and their preparation for sale.
First sales graduate became a winner: Bestrella, out of the brothers’ first broodmare purchase Howareyabelle, won at Dundalk in July 2020 for Johnny Murtagh.
Top-priced yearling at the 2022 Tattersalls Ireland Sapphire Sale: consigned a Calyx filly out of Staceymac, sold to Con and Amy Marnane for €30,000.
€60,000 foal sale at Goffs: consigned a Zarak filly purchased by Fort Middle Stud at the 2022 November Foal Sale.
Broodmare acquisition for Oakley Park Mares Syndicate: Tattersalls records Ighraa’s purchase in December 2024 under “Oakley Park Mares Syndicate / BBB (Agent)”, demonstrating the business’s role in sourcing breeding stock for the syndicate.
Browne Brothers’ approach combines practical horse care with a personal service shaped around each client’s bloodstock objectives. Their work spans breeding-stock management, foaling and preparation for sale, bringing together the day-to-day development of the horse and the requirements of the commercial bloodstock market.
Pedigrees and careful selection are important parts of that approach. Dylan has described the ambition to improve the quality of the horses they handle and build a strong reputation as consignors, working with both their own stock and horses belonging to clients. The family’s involvement in sales preparation provides continuity between selecting a horse, developing it and presenting it to buyers.
For breeding-syndicate members, the experience centres on following that process rather than a racing campaign. The objective is to prepare mares and youngstock for their intended sales, without promising a particular sale price or financial outcome.
