Ownership made simple,
transparent, and truly yours

Racehorse ownership on Horsebox comes in two flavours: syndicate shares (co-ownership) and racing club memberships (membership access). Both bring you closer to the horse, the yard and race days.

Syndicate shares (co-ownership)

A syndicate lets multiple people co-own a racehorse under a licensed operator (named a "Syndicator"). You buy a percentage share for the agreed term, prize money is usually split pro-rata, and costs are set out up front (e.g. buy-in plus monthly keep). The Syndicator handles the admin; you get the access and the days out.

Note on leasing: some syndicates offer leased shares — access for a fixed period without equity. Any benefits and prize-money arrangements are exactly as stated in the agreement, and your interest ends when the term ends.

Racing clubs (membership access)

A racing club is a membership, not equity. You join a professionally run group that follows a stable of horses and you get the experiences set out in the club’s rules such as regular updates, yard visits, paddock/owners’ area ballots on race days, and community events. Operated by BHA-licensed providers with clear monthly or annual fees and simple online join.

Note on returns: Racing clubs do not confer legal ownership and typically don’t pay prize money to members. Any ballots, perks or distributions are exactly as stated in the club’s terms

Frequently asked questions

Curious about racehorse ownership? Here are some common inquiries that can help you navigate your journey and make informed decisions.

What is Horsebox and how does it work?

Horsebox is a platform that makes it easy to browse, purchase, and manage racehorse ownership options online. We partner with licensed syndicates, racing clubs, and trainers to bring you a selection of syndicate shares and racing club memberships-all available to buy directly through our website.

What you’re buying depends on the specific syndicate or club offer. On Horsebox, we facilitate both syndicate shares (leased and non-leased) and racing club memberships, all listed by BHA-licensed managers. Some offers include a beneficial interest in a racehorse, while others are more experience-based - like being part of a racing club that gives you access to updates, events, and behind-the-scenes perks.

Each listing clearly outlines what’s included: some may offer prize money distribution, while others might focus on experiences like stable visits, paddock passes, or owners’ badges. The level of involvement and the specific perks vary by manager and offer - so be sure to review the listing and syndicate/club agreement carefully before you buy.

Horsebox is built to give you a genuine connection to the world of racing - not to offer financial returns. Some syndicate shares may include a portion of prize money, depending on the terms set by the licensed manager, but this varies by offer. Racing club memberships usually don’t include prize money (though a few may offer incentives). If you’re buying through Horsebox, do it for the experience - the updates, the access, the experiences, the people, and the joy of being involved in the sport.

We take security and privacy seriously. All payments on Horsebox are handled through trusted, regulated payment providers, so your card details are never stored on our servers. Your personal data is protected using encrypted connections and secure infrastructure, in full compliance with applicable data protection and privacy laws. We also use blockchain technology to record and store agreements between you and licensed managers. This creates a permanent, tamper-proof record of your purchase - helping ensure transparency and trust without compromising your privacy.

Yes, horse racing is an unpredictable sport, and there are always risks involved when buying a share or membership horses can get injured, underperform, or be withdrawn from races for any number of reasons. Managers may make changes to the syndicate or racing plans based on what’s best for the horse, and some perks or experiences may be subject to availability or change. While some syndicate shares may include prize money, there is no guarantee of return, and purchases on Horsebox should be made for enjoyment.

All decisions about a horse’s training, care, and racing schedule are made by the licensed trainer or syndicate manager - their job is to act in the horse’s best interest, and they hold full responsibility for its welfare and career. That said, some managers may choose to involve their members in smaller, community-led decisions, such as naming a horse, voting on merchandise designs, or choosing race-day colours. While these don’t affect the horse’s racing strategy, they’re a fun way to feel more involved.

Injuries and setbacks are an unfortunate reality in racing. If a horse becomes injured or is no longer able to race, the licensed trainer or syndicate manager will make decisions about the horse’s future, with the animal’s welfare as the top priority. Depending on the situation, the horse may be rested, retired, rehomed, or in some cases, transitioned to breeding. In rare but serious circumstances, if a horse passes away, the manager will handle all necessary steps and communicate directly with those involved. If your agreement includes ongoing maintenance fees, these may be paused or adjusted depending on the manager’s policy - but this is always at their discretion and should be outlined in your original agreement. In some cases, additional costs such as veterinary care may be shared across the group. Horsebox facilitates the connection between buyers and licensed managers but does not manage horses directly. However, we’re always here to help where we can and to support clear communication between all parties.

When a horse retires, what happens next depends on the structure of your agreement and the plans set out by the syndicate or club manager. In some cases - particularly in non-leased syndicates - your share may entitle you to a portion of proceeds from the horse’s sale or future breeding activity, if outlined in the original terms. In other cases, your involvement may simply end when the horse retires or your agreement term concludes.

At Horsebox, we care deeply about the wellbeing of the horses listed on our platform. While we don’t manage horses directly, we only work with licensed syndicates, racing clubs and trainers who are regulated under the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The BHA sets and enforces strict welfare standards that apply throughout a horse’s life - during training, on the racecourse and beyond. Trainers must meet high standards to be licensed, including proving they are suitable to care for racehorses and operate premises that meet welfare guidelines. By working exclusively within this licensed and regulated framework, Horsebox helps ensure that everyone involved in the sport is held to clear, enforceable standards of care.
