About trainer

Born into a family steeped in the traditions of horses and horseracing, Alastair Ralph began his racing career when he left school working initially for Michael Scudamore. After this, he moved to Ditcheat to work for the legendary National Hunt trainer Paul Nicholls, before moving on to ride out for the 2014 Grand National winning trainer Dr Richard Newland. Following his time spent with Dr Richard Newland, Alastair then moved to the Downton Estate in Shropshire where he served as Assistant Trainer to Henry Daly for 5 seasons. In addition, Alastair also ran his own yard of point-to-pointers which grew from strength to strength each season, in 2015, Alastair obtained his trainer’s licence.

Bind Equine National Hunt
Based at Bind Farm in rural Shropshire, Alastair Ralph trains from a purpose-built National Hunt yard with proper depth to its facilities. The horses have access to more than 300 acres of grassland split between the main yard and a second farm half an hour away, giving plenty of variety in their work and turnout.
The gallop starts on a gentle incline, then climbs more firmly through the middle before levelling off, building fitness without bottoming them. Around 50 horses are housed in a well-ventilated American-style barn, with toughened plastic boxes designed for easy cleaning and disinfection.
Schooling is a big part of the routine: there are hurdles and fences on both grass and all-weather, and horses are popped over them regularly by the yard’s main jockeys to keep confidence high. A covered horse walker in the centre of the yard means they can stretch their legs safely in any weather, and a large loose school with a sand-and-carpet surface is used for warming up and giving Alastair a close look at each horse before they head to the gallops.

Key achievements

Since taking out his licence in 2015, Alastair has steadily built a reputation as a trainer who improves his horses and places them shrewdly. From starting with a small team, the yard has grown to 50 boxes and a consistent flow of winners over hurdles and fences.

Handicap chasers, staying hurdlers and young, progressive types have all flown the flag for Bind Farm, with notable successes including Billingsley’s win in the Geoffrey Gilbey Handicap Chase at Newbury, alongside a regular stream of Saturday and midweek winners at tracks up and down the country.

For owners, that translates into a yard that can win at the everyday meetings while still having the depth and ambition to aim at the bigger days when the right horse comes along.

Philosophy

Alastair’s approach is quietly straightforward: fit, happy horses, placed in the right races, and owners kept in the loop.

Bind Farm is set up for old-fashioned horsemanship with a modern brain behind it. Horses live on a tried-and-tested routine of open fields, regular schooling and steady conditioning on the uphill gallops, with each one worked as an individual rather than on a conveyor belt.

Time in some of Britain’s most respected National Hunt yards has shaped the way the team operates: attention to detail in daily care, patient campaigning and a focus on sending horses to the track to run well, not simply to make up the numbers. Owners are treated as part of that process, with honest assessments, sensible targets and a clear plan for every horse in the yard.
