Ross Burdon is a Newmarket-based Flat trainer who took out his own licence in 2025 after building experience with some of the most respected names in racing. His career has included time with Sir Henry Cecil at Warren Place during the Frankel years, senior roles with Roger Varian, Ismail Mohammed and Andrew Balding, and a spell as assistant trainer to Kevin Philippart de Foy. Ross also spent time in Australia riding Group 1 horses for champion trainer Chris Waller.
After initially setting out to become a jockey and having a handful of rides both on the Flat and over jumps, Ross moved into training and gradually worked his way through the industry before establishing RB Racing in Newmarket. His operation has grown quickly, moving into the larger Sackville House Stables in early 2026 as the string expanded.
RB Racing is based at Sackville House Stables in Newmarket, an historic Grade II listed training yard situated at the foot of Warren Hill. The recently refurbished yard contains 28 boxes, alongside three offices, tack and feed rooms, washing facilities and extensive storage.
Its location provides exceptional access to Newmarket's training grounds. Horses can reach the famous Warren Hill gallops within seconds without having to encounter road traffic, while the wider Newmarket training infrastructure provides access to around 2,500 acres of gallops as well as leading veterinary and equine facilities.
The combination of a relatively compact 28-box yard and world-class Newmarket facilities allows Ross and his team to maintain a hands-on approach while operating from the centre of British Flat racing.
Ross made an immediate impression after taking out his trainer's licence in 2025. Mesaafi became his first winner at Chelmsford on 1 June, before following up just four days later at Lingfield.
The early success of the yard has supported rapid growth from a small initial string into a larger Newmarket operation. By January 2026 Ross had outgrown his original premises and moved into the 28-box Sackville House Stables, marking an important next stage in the development of RB Racing.
His background also includes working with elite horses and leading racing operations in Britain and Australia, including Sir Henry Cecil during Frankel's career and Chris Waller's powerful Australian stable.
Ross's approach is centred around treating every horse as an individual, with patience, careful preparation and long-term development at the heart of the training process. His experience across a variety of leading yards has shaped a method that combines traditional horsemanship with detailed race planning and an understanding of when to allow horses the time they need to progress.
The ownership experience is equally important. Ross operates an open-door approach to the yard and places a strong emphasis on communication, with owners receiving regular updates on their horses, running plans, race previews and post-race feedback. The aim is for owners to feel closely involved with their horse throughout the season, not simply on racedays.
